White Space

Last week I sat down in a comfy reclining chair and looked out the window at a picture perfect nature preserve.  The trees were budding, the soft music was playing.  It felt like just a taste of heaven… until I heard the dentist drill revving up.  Four novocain shots and a temporary crown later I was on my way back to the office. I could hardly move my tongue.  If you called me on my cell you know why I didn’t answer.  I didn’t walk away more rested.  In fact in the end I was more tense (especially after every zing I felt on my tooth).  I usually think I am too busy to take some down time.  My to do list is just as long as yours.  Sometimes I buy into the lie that says I can do more in 24 hours than Jack Bower. The antidote to busyness is MARGIN.

When we don’t have margin we have stress.  Designers know the value of “White Space.” We fill up every square inch of the page because we think I have a little extra, why not cram more in.   Most high end brands understand the importance of simplicity.  We try to add just a little bit more… that is all that I need.  Psalm 23 says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need.”    When we fill the void with more stuff we become more distracted, cluttered, and busy. What we are looking for is not another “thing” it is Him.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all about “Carpe Diem.”  I want to get the most out of the moment.  But to get the most out of life I must let there be room for white space.

The Bible promises that our Good Shepherd will “make us lie down in green pastures and lead us beside still waters.”  Get over the guilt of having some margin. He is ready to quench your spiritual thirst.

Personaltiy DNA

A number of people are talking about a free personality test. I joined the club to find out my “personal DNA”. Here are my results. My personalDNA Report Today I am an “Animated Creator”. When I take these kinds of tests, I’m amazed at how the results change based on the environment I’m in. If you need any creative ideas, just talk to me in my office on Tuesday mornings!

Leadership Summit

We had our second monthly “Leadership Summit” for Valley Creek. I wish we would have started this earlier… but I know the timing is right. The volunteer leaders at our church are ready to break through the leadership roof and see God’s kingdom advance! Our church has world class leaders that are ready to follow after God and see the East Metro transformed for Him. I’ve been sharing some Leadership videos from Bill Hybels and next month we will be hearing from Andy Stanley. I also just found another DVD from Willow Creek titled “The Top 10 Highest Rated Leadership Sessions of All Time.” I just ordered it, it looks good. The future of our church totally depends on our leaders. I thank God that he has brought awesome people into our church.

Starbucks and Jesus

I had the opportunity tonight to talk with someone from our church about what it means to have a relationship with Jesus. She came to Valley Creek just a few weeks ago and is wanting to figure out how to get past her doubts reconciling God and science. I was able to give her some great resources to read. As I was sitting there tonight I saw Rick Warren’s quote on my Starbucks coffee cup.

“You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He wanted you alive and created you for a purpose. Focusing on yourself will never reveal your real purpose. You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Only in God do we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance and our destiny.”

The quote fit great in our conversation about why God placed us here on this planet. What a cool moment.

Buzz Conference

I decided to head to The Buzz Conference in Washington DC May 4-5. I enjoyed reading what Mark Batterson and his team have been up to over the past year. He is a busy guy… writing a book, hosting a conference, blogging, and starting a coffee shop. I’m looking forward to interacting with a bunch of creative people! Maybe I’ll see you there.

Harbor Christian Center

Yesterday I had coffee with Gino Grunberg. He is the lead pastor of Harbor Christian Center. Gino is an amazing leader in the areas of business and administration. He challenged my thinking in so many areas. Gino’s team puts the 80 / 10 / 10 financial principle into practice beyond personal finance and applies them to the church budget. 80% goes towards operational expenses, 10% towards ministry beyond their walls, and 10% towards long term savings. Great spending time with people who think differently.

Sacred Journey

I had a chance to see Eric and his team at Sacred Journey today. I love seeing what God is up to around the country. Sacred Journey is passionate about reaching out in Kirkland WA. They are creative and have awesome continuity in the look and feel of their church. This church was birthed during Eric and Cherie’s time with us at Valley Creek. It is great to have had some small part in seeing this new church develop. If you are ever in Kirkland check out what God is up to at Sacred Journey.
